Delta Air Lines DC-8 model

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines operated a fleet of six DC-8-11s which were delivered from the Douglas factory in 1959, plus an additional seven former Pan Am DC-8-33s added to the fleet in 1969.

Delta’s original -11s were converted to series -51s in 1963, and remained in service until 1980s. The thirstier former Pan Am -33s were retired in 1974 during the oil crises. For the most part, Delta operated their short DC-8s on the domestic US trunk routes, and were supplemented by a fleet of thirteen DC-8-61s, which made Delta’s DC-8s quite a common site at US airports in the 1960s and 1970s.
